Located at 1501 Daviess Street in the heart of Owensboro, KY, Thriftway opened its doors for the first time in 1965. The original owners, Ken Lawson, Sr., Albert Kittinger, and E.W.Chinn started Thriftway as an experimental lumber yard.
Innovative ideas made Thriftway unique– like a “cash and carry” lumber yard, fork lifts to save manpower, and single level, concrete floor buildings to take the weight of machines.
Three years later, Mr. Lawson, who served as Thriftway’s first president, bought out the interests of the other two owners and continued to grow and expand the business until 1984 when his son, Ken Lawson, Jr., took the reins.
Ken carried on his father’s legacy as he continued to find new ways to strengthen the company and secure its place in the community. In 1984, Ken introduced Thriftway to the Lumbermen’s Merchandising Corporation, the country’s largest and most financially stable buying cooperative for independent lumber dealers. The low wholesale prices provided by LMC allowed Thriftway to better serve their customers and therefore, gain a competitive edge in the market place. The business not only grew in the Owensboro market, but also expanded to Indiana in 1994. Thriftway opened a second store at 2037 Main Street in Tell City to serve the communitie’s need for quality lumber in a convenient location. That store remained open until July of 2010.
Since then the progress has continued with the opening of several affiliate companies, HardwareOvernight, Wholesale Doors & Trim and Installation, LLC. HardwareOvernight.com began selling on the web in 2001 and had regular customers as far away as Brisbane, Australia. Wholesale Doors and Trim opened in 2004, and was the first Energy Star Rated door shop in Kentucky. It is the only door manufacturing facility in the area that serves the custom needs of each individual builder and homeowner. Installation, LLC provides reliable, affordable installation services for most of the quality products sold at Thriftway. As always, it remains the steadfast mission of Thriftway to continue to find new and innovative ways to best serve their most important asset, the customer.
